About the event

Workshop Description

Many educators approach conversations about race feeling unsure, self-conscious, or worried they’ll “say it wrong.” Often, this hesitation comes from the belief that there is one correct way to talk about race—or that confident conversations are something other people do.

EquiTalk challenges that belief.

This workshop introduces a communication-style framework that helps educators see the range of ways adults naturally talk with children about race and difference. Rather than ranking styles as good or bad, EquiTalk affirms that all styles are valid and reflect strengths children need—such as clarity, care, curiosity, reflection, and affirmation.

Through guided reflection and a self-assessment, educators identify their dominant communication style and learn how it functions as a superpower in conversations about race. Participants also explore how to intentionally build non-dominant styles to enrich conversations over time.
